When a founder asks ChatGPT "what CRM should my small business use", the answer names three or four products and the conversation is over. No page two, no ad slot, no second chance. So we measured who actually gets named.
We ran five popular CRMs through our scanner: HubSpot, Pipedrive, Attio, Close and Folk. Each brand was tested with five real buyer questions across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, all on the same day in August 2026. Every answer was parsed for who got mentioned, at what rank, and who the engines recommended instead.
The scoreboard
| Brand | Visibility score (0 to 100) | Engines that name it (of 4) | Best rank |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pipedrive | 49 | 3 | #1 |
| HubSpot | 39 | 4 | #1 |
| Attio | 33 | 4 | #1 |
| Folk | 24 | 4 | #1 |
| Close | 11 | 2 | #1 |
Nobody dominates this category the way we have seen winners dominate elsewhere. The highest score is 49 out of 100, which means even the strongest brand is absent from half the conversations where a buyer could meet it.
Finding 1: the category leader has a blind spot
Pipedrive tops the table. ChatGPT names it in every single answer we collected, usually first. Gemini names it in four of five.
Claude names it zero times.
Not ranked low. Not mentioned in passing. Absent. When Claude answers small business CRM questions, it recommends Salesforce and others while the segment leader never appears. If your buyers lean on Claude, Pipedrive effectively does not exist, and Pipedrive almost certainly does not know.
This is the single most common pattern we see in scans: strong overall visibility hiding a total blackout on one engine.
Finding 2: HubSpot is everyone's runner-up
HubSpot is the only brand of the five named by all four engines with real frequency. But look at the ranks: on ChatGPT and Claude its best placement is #2. It shows up everywhere and wins the top slot on only half the engines.
For the biggest brand in the category, that is a strange kind of strength. The AIs treat HubSpot as the safe mention, not the recommendation.
Finding 3: Close is losing deals it never sees
Close scored 11. On Perplexity and Gemini it is not mentioned at all. Worse, we log what the engines recommend instead, and on both engines the answer was the same: HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive.
That sentence is worth sitting with. Two of four major AI engines answer Close's exact buyer questions by recommending three of its competitors by name. Every buyer who asks is routed somewhere else, silently, every day.
Finding 4: the newcomers punch above their size
Attio and Folk are far younger than the incumbents, and both get named by all four engines. When Attio appears, it appears at #1. Folk is thinner on frequency but also takes #1 placements, including on Claude, where Pipedrive is invisible.
AI answers are not a seniority list. The engines lean on recent comparison articles and category roundups, and newer products that show up in those sources can outrank twenty-year incumbents inside the answer box.
One brand we did not scan kept appearing anyway
Salesforce was not in our test set, but it surfaced repeatedly as the recommended alternative in answers about other brands. The incumbent casts a shadow over the whole category even when nobody asks about it.
What a CRM marketer should do with this
- Find your blackout engine. Aggregate scores hide the engine where you are at zero. That engine has buyers too.
- Read what gets cited. Engines assemble answers from comparison posts and category pages. If you are absent, the fastest fix is getting into the sources they already trust.
- Track it weekly. These answers move as the engines refresh. A one-time audit is a snapshot; the trend is the signal.
Methodology
Five buyer-intent questions per brand, generated from each brand's own positioning, asked across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini on August 1, 2026. Answers parsed for brand mentions, rank position and cited sources. Scores use position-weighted mention math: being recommended first is worth more than being name-dropped.
